It’s seemingly evident that no one else is gonna stand up for the band Plates of Cake, so listen up before I grab you by the collar and pull. These guys have grown up in public, schoolboys in disgrace if you will, learning the insides out of classy, boarding school-bound rock from troubled cases, from Nick Lowe to Robyn Hitchcock to Verlaine/Lloyd (whose influence really stand up on their third and best album Becoming Double), and if I wasn’t entirely enamored with their output before, this one caught me between the peeps with a lacrosse stick. They have this preppy dirtbag thing going on in the music that is just so fucking classy I could PUKE, and this time every track on the album – not just two or three – shows up to jam. Even the slower, shambling ones at the beginning serve a higher purpose, which takes place when the vibraphone hits on “Faces in the Dirt,” Jonathan Byerley exploring it all from his vantage point up front, his voice untraditional but confident, pitched between Mark Knopfler and Joey Ramone. The guitar skills are up to snuff with the songwriting, and they are finally able to let things get LOUD for a change (“Old Time Brutes”), and even pick up some twinned-out leads on “Compton Crackdown.” Look, my impression of these guys may be completely different than who they are, but I love the fiction – rugby players crashing mom’s cocktail party with muddy shoes, threatening to get sent off to some faraway academy and wear uniforms and play rock music at the school dance. Who put these images in my head? WHO CARES. Here’s a short and incredibly CLASSY record for you to figure yourself out over. Oh wait, you’ve already figured yourself out? I DOUBT IT. Be on the right side of fake history for once, will ya? (http://platesofcake.bandcamp.com)
